Finalists
Audacious Idea
Akamai Technologies - Creating Financial Incentives for Off-Peak Energy Efficiency Through Metered-Power Data Center Contracts

Historically, colocation vendors embed energy costs into fixed-price contracts in the form of rack space and/or circuit charges.  The goal of this case study was to assess potential financial and energy savings of moving from fixed-price to metered-power contracts to resolve this financial barrier to higher efficiencies.

Beyond the Data Center
KPMG - Sustainable IT Next Practice: Influencing Employee Travel Patterns

Air travel is the largest contributor to KPMG’s carbon footprint and has the highest potential to be influenced by Sustainable IT.   To demonstrate the impact of Sustainable IT practices, KPMG’s IT group collaborated with Travel Services and Procurement departments to engage employees during travel booking transaction and influence them to not travel or when traveling to stay in a green labeled hotel.

Data Center Design
Brocade Communications Systems - Brocade Data Center Consolidation and Energy Efficiency

The purpose of this project/case study was to consolidate three data centers (7,000 sqft, 150 racks) into one Data Center and consolidate 83,000 sqft and 1978 racks of R&D racks spread over five different buildings into one building. The two primary goals were to consolidate our data center and R&D labs into a reduced lab footprint, and design and build a world class data center that was energy efficient. In order to achieve the best in class PUE and reduce our energy consumption we investigated and implemented a series of best practices at a building and local lab level to accomplish our results.
