| Standby Power Generation Ensures Nonstop Operation at Communications Data Center | |
| Cox Enterprises in Phoenix, Arizona, recently completed a new 114,000 square-foot data center to serve millions of digital video, internet, telephone and wireless customers. Michael Mosman, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at CCG Facilities Integration Inc., will describe the innovative solution developed by the CCG engineering team and engineers at Cummins Power Generation. John Kilinskis and Terry Seger from Cummins Power Generation will be on hand to answer questions about the integrated standby power system installed at the Cox data center, including three Cummins generator sets and a PowerCommand paralleling system. Isolated Parallel UPS System Topology at DuPont Fabros' Santa Clara Data Center |
| DuPont Fabros Technology’s latest data center utilizes a cutting-edge UPS topology known as the Isolated-Parallel System (IP System). A multi-module system with sixteen 1300kW units in parallel, it delivers 18.2MW of usable critical power. Specifically architected for multi-tenant facilities, this UPS system allows tenants to have a dedicated UPS system for their computer room while simultaneously providing fault isolation from UPS systems serving other computer rooms. Correspondingly, power is shared equally among the rotary UPS modules in parallel. | Reclaiming Data Center Capacity Through Integrated IT and Facilities Operations | |
| A major problem facing data center managers today is realizing the full potential of available data center space, power, cooling and airflow resources. Operational practices are fragmented at the subsystem levels, which hinders efforts to maintain optimal data center performance. The most critical fragmentation occurs between the IT and facilities operations groups, isolating the processes for managing the IT equipment and the cooling system required to keep the IT equipment operational. To compensate for the lack of coordination, cooling capacity and airflow are over provisioned, diverting a significant amount of available power away from the IT equipment and reducing the IT loading capacity of the facility. A new methodology and integrated solution is presented in the form of a case study that integrates the IT and facilities management processes without undue constraints. | How Reliable Smart Grids and High Efficiency UPS Improves Data Center Efficiency | |
| Double conversion UPS is required for data centers, but operating continuously in double conversion mode is not required. The utility Smart Grids in developed countries are clean and reliable enough 99% of the time. The double conversion UPS does not need to continuously condition utility power that is already "clean". Eliminating unnecessary power conditioning improves UPS efficiency to 99%. When utility power is not clean, the UPS returns to double conversion operating mode maintaining reliable power to the data center. Making Uninterruptible Utility Power a Reality |
| The growing demand for capacity on the internet has led data center operators to build larger and larger facilities to drive costs down in terms of capital spent and total cost of ownership (TCO). However, as centers get larger and more powerful, meeting the need for UPS and back-up power protection gets much harder. Over a decade ago S&C Electric Company pioneered the concept of large-scale medium-voltage UPS as a utility-scale solution. That large UPS approach has been presented in several Uptime Institute white papers published over the last five years. Recently S&c expanded that medium-voltage Ups solution to even large systems (up to 25 MVA) with any battery protection time (typically 5-15 minutes) desired by the data center management. For mega-center applications S&C has developed the concept of Tier III “Plus” UPS design, which enhances the protection level on dual bus power schemes in a cost-effective way. This concept will be presented. Now as centers get larger and larger (20 MW and up) the availability of adequate utility power capacity is challenging site selection for new facilities. Over the last six years S&C has worked with several major US utilities on large-scale energy storage systems, which store hours of power that can be applied as a load management tool not just a UPS “insurance policy”.
