Audacious Idea - Microsoft
Containerization: An Evolution in Data Center Efficiency
Daniel Costello, Director of Datacenter Services Research and Engineering, Global Foundation Services, Microsoft; Sean Farney, Data Center Manager, Microsoft
Microsoft's goal was to build the world's first known container data center capable of supporting 200+ unique online, live, and cloud services for businesses and consumers globally. Their containerized data center in Chicago reduced PUE from 1.6 to 1.15, reduced build costs 33%, reduced OpEx 30%, and reduced time to deployment by 300%.
Best Facilities Product - Verizon Wireless
Orangeburg Data Center: Data Center Intelligent Cooling Controls
Dennis Purcell, Senior Member, Technical Staff, Verizon Wireless
Verizon Wireless partnered with Emerson Network Power to install an intelligent cooling control system for its data center. With better control, Verizon improved its cooling efficiency by placing redundant cooling components in a "hot standby" mode. These standby units can reactivate as needed, saving energy without increasing risk to IT operations.
Best IT Product - Raritan
Data Center Energy Efficiency Improvement
Herman Chan, Director, Power Business Unit, Raritan
As part of a data center upgrade, J.R. Simplot installed Raritan's intelligent rack PDUs and energy management software. The company also reconfigured its power distribution from 120 volt to 240 volt AC power. These changes allowed for improved capacity management, reliability, and energy efficiency.
Beyond the Data Center - Helsingin Energia
The World's Most Eco-Efficient Computer Hall from Helsingin Energia
Juha Sipilä, Project Manager, Helsingin Energia; Pasi Hurri, Member of the Board of Directors, Academica; Jari Ängeslevä, Senior Business Development Director, Helsingin Energia and Invest in Finland
Helsingin Energia's innovative solution uses the recovery of waste heat to heat buildings and water in the City of Helsinki. Working in cooperation with ICT service provider Academica, Helsingin Energia has reduced CO2 emissions from computer hall cooling by 80%. Their long-term goal is completely carbon-neutral production by 2050.
Data Center Design - HP
A Cool, Low-Energy Approach to Sustainable Data Center Design
Ed Kettler, HP Fellow and Green IT Strategist, HP Enterprise Services; John Mullan, Managing Director, Housham Henderson Architects
The HP Wynyard data center takes advantage of a cool climate to reduce the energy required for cooling by using a large quantity of fresh air supplied by axial fans through high-efficiency filters. The building is an energy-efficient and sustainable design, incorporating recycled materials and rainwater harvesting.
Facilities Innovation - Savvis
NJ2 HVAC Upgrade Project
Pepe Castells, Central Engineering Group, Savvis
This project was to replace and upgrade the controls of the 12-year-old chiller and pumping system at one of Savvis's data centers. The project was completed without any impact to the IT function, and the energy savings will provide an 18-month payback, as well as increased redndancy for the facility.
IT Innovation -
Office of the Chief Administrative Officer, US House of Representatives
Going Green at the US House of Representatives
Jack Nichols, Director, Enterprise Operations, Office of the Chief Administrative Officer, US House of Representatives
The data center for the US House of Representatives provides mission-critical enterprise services supporting all House offices throughout the country. But the primary data center was at capacity in terms of space and power usage. As part of the Green the Capitol program, the House data center virtualized the majority of their server infrastructure and right-sized the servers. The initiative reduced power consumption by 70% while allowing for enhanced data center services.
Joint IT and Facilities Innovation - Itaú
An Integration Tool between IT and Facilities Departments in a Large Bank
Julio Cezar De Conti, Superintendent of Engineering and IT Infrastructure, Itaú; Fabiano Duarte, IT Engineer, member of the Green IT Team, Itaú
Itaú, an 85-year old financial institution with a strong focus on Internet banking, has grown enormously in the last 20 years. As their data centers grew, so did their energy consumption. As part of a multi-year, multi-faceted Green IT initiative, Itaú joined IT and Facilities departments under the same board of direction, with shared mission, goals and responsibilities. To date Itaú's integrative approach to achieving 100% efficiency and availability has resulted in significant energy and cost savings annually, and 98% of their e-waste is recycled.
