In this session, the winner(s) of the 2012 Green Enterprise IT Award in the Modular Data Center Product Deployment category will present their Award-winning case study profiling the deployment of a resource- and energy-efficient modular data center product in a new or existing data center. The Rooftop Modular Data Center Case Study describes eBay’s process to select and deploy a Dell Modular Data Center (MDC) solution to support their data center objectives related to deploying a new search platform. The solution had a requirement to match a concurrently maintainable Tier II facility design with a minimum design PUE of 1.20. The MDC solution was needed within a 5 month period, from issuance of a purchase order to having the systems available for software and code development. The Dell MDC was installed on the rooftop of eBay’s Phoenix data center facility which was still undergoing construction to meet the delivery timeframe of the aggressive schedule. The MDC solution demonstrates extreme efficiency with a measured PUE of 1.043 - 13% more efficient than the design requirement. The solution included an IT module designed to support up to 30kW per rack (redundantly) and handle a maximum draw of 600kW. The modular solution was tuned to reduce the maximum consumption of the racks down from 28kW to 26kW resulting in a 7% net energy savings at the maximum IT load. At the maximum draw the reduction in power consumption results in a monthly savings of $1,000/month, and 38,000 lbs. of CO2 emissions avoided. The results of the collaborative effort demonstrated innovative, game changing results. The installed MDC has achieved free cooling year-round in desert climates with rack densities up to 26 kW which enabled the ability to rapidly deploy thousands of servers at extreme operating efficiency. |
