Data Center Facilities Design and Operation

Data center facilities executives must wring every last drop of performance out of their data center infrastructure while minimizing the resources and cost used to support the IT load. Sessions in this track will provide data center design and facilities professionals with

  • the latest information on critical facilities infrastructure,
  • direction to ensure facilities management teams work in lockstep with their IT counterparts, and
  • best practices for optimizing cooling and power distribution systems for maximum availability and efficiency.

Enterprise IT Architecture, Operations and Optimization

IT managers are facing rapidly evolving server, storage and network systems management challenges. Uptime Institute will bring together industry leading experts to discuss the most important topics facing IT executives:

  • advanced server virtualization deployment,
  • data center consolidation case studies,
  • the economics of private cloud computing, and
  • capacity planning recommendations for an unstable economic climate.

Cloud Computing, Third-Party Colocation and Hosting Management

Many organizations have recently built new data centers, yet still are compelled to turn to third-party IT service providers to meet fluctuating IT capacity demand. These organizations may use multiple in-house data centers, outsourced hosting providers, and even cloud services to meet different business objectives. Management teams that effectively negotiate and control these relationships will become increasingly important for organizations. This track will focus on the following topics:

  • practical aspects of cloud implementation: governance, cost, security;
  • cloud computing "lessons-learned-so-far" case studies;and
  • best practices for managing colocation and managed-service provider relationships as well as service-level agreements in this hybrid world.

Track 1: Data Center Facilities Design and Operation
The Raised Floor Debate
In our 2011 Uptime Institute Survey, around 90% of respondents said they currently had raised floors installed in their data centers. But only 48% said they would install raised floors in future facilities. There are compelling arguments for going with either raised or slab floor designs. Uptime Institute Founder Ken Brill discusses the pros and cons with industry experts.
Are Cloud Providers and Colos Angling for your Job?
The short answer is "Yes," so start managing them. 451 Research's Carl Brooks will discuss how IT and data center staff can get involved with managing third party service providers. Traditional job requirements will shift radically to suit the demands of a services world. The IT or data center manager who holds the reins to the cloud will have real influence over their careers and organizations in the future.
The IT and Facilities Newlywed Game
Data center facilities and IT management teams will participate in a lively game modeled on the old TV game show. IT and Facilities executives will be brought on stage separately and questioned about their colleagues' areas of expertise.
EDF Climate Corps Data Center Case Studies
The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) Climate Corps matches trained students from top MBA programs with companies to develop practical, actionable energy efficiency plans. In the three years since the program's inception, Climate Corps fellows have identified $658 million in potential savings for the companies at which they have worked. This session will profile recent case studies.
Green Enterprise IT Award Case Studies
Uptime Institute grants Green Enterprise IT (GEIT) Awards to projects, products and ideas that significantly improve energy productivity and resource use in IT. In these sessions, 2012 GEIT Award honorees present their end-user case studies.
Detailed Results from Uptime Institute's 2012 Annual Data Center Survey
Matt Stansberry unveils the results from the 2012 Uptime Institute Annual Data Center Survey on IT-Facilities integration challenges. Last year's results from around 1,000 data center owners and operators provided valuable insight for the industry.
Uptime Institute M&O Approved!
Uptime Institute's Peter Crook profiles the Institute's latest initiative, the Management & Operations (M&O) Program, which includes an "M&O Approved" site award. In this session, early adopters discuss the process, value and benefits of the M&O program.

Track 2: Enterprise IT Architecture, Operations and Optimization
Is Private Cloud a Huge Waste of Money?
According to last year's Uptime Institute survey, about half of the respondents are considering or implementing what they define as Private Cloud. What does that mean exactly? Are companies hosting their own neo-mainframes? Racks of the new Cisco UCS, Vblocks, or Oracle Exadata machines? Or are companies buying self-service provisioning of secured virtual machines through a colo?

Private cloud can mean a lot of different things. In this session TheInfoPro's Founder, Ken Male, will provide insight into how IT purchasers are defining private cloud, and whether it is a good investment.
Federal Government Data Center Consolidation: Meritalk Keynote Panel
Steve O'Keefe of the US government IT user group Meritalk will moderate a panel of federal IT executives as they discuss the challenges and lessons learned from the US government's massive data center consolidation efforts.

DCIM Implementation Issues
Andy Lawrence, Research Director for The 451 Groups Datacenter Technologies practice, will present the latest research on Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) software and will host a panel discussion on best practices for DCIM implementation success.
Digital Infrastructure Dashboard: Findings of the 2012 Uptime Institute Charrette
The 2012 Charrette identified and described the processes for evaluating Digital Infrastructure assets. What are the performance indicators executives need to collect to provide a succinct and effective reporting for C-level executives? Join Hank Seader and Charrette participants as they discuss the Charrette's results: a common terminology, and the data gathering processes for a Digital Infrastructure Dashboard.
Server Roundup Winners
In 2011, Uptime Institute announced its inaugural Uptime Institute Server Roundup. Based upon our field experience, up to 10% of servers in racks aren't doing anything. Decommissioning a single 1U rack server can result in $500 per year in energy savings, an additional $500 in operating system licenses, and $1,500 in hardware maintenance costs. That's not chump change. So Uptime Institute offered a bounty on obsolete machines. In this session, contest winners will present their strategies for decommissioning comatose servers.
