2012 Winners
Audacious Idea
Open Compute Project
Facebook first announced construction of a dedicated facility of its own in early 2010, stating that consolidating its presence in numerous shared facilities made sense economically and environmentally. The company then decided to share many of the insights it gained from the project and other data center builds via its Open Compute initiative. The project has gone on to garner wide industry support.
Facility Design Implementation
Verizon Wireless
From "Just Get it Built!" to "Green and Gold"

Verizon Wireless had traditionally tackled the need for more IT capacity by adding a few more servers or other equipment. However, acquisition and organic growth recently prompted the company to build a new dedicated facility. Even though the time constraints on the project were tight, Verizon decided to build a high availability site that was also sustainable. The final data center was certified as Tier III Constructed Facility by Uptime Institute and also achieved a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold rating from the US Green Building Council.
Facility Design Innovation
Bell Canada and Urbacon Architecture
Lowest Greenest PUE (1.266) Utilizing 'Off-The-Shelf' Equipment
The design of a Bell Canada data center uses alternative strategies to deploy solutions that have a low component count and are efficient, reliable and cost effective. The data center was optimized with a mix of current technologies that provide critical capabilities and enable a high level of availability and operational efficiency.
Facility Product Deployment
NTT Communications and Vigilent
Cooling Virtualization Delivers Improved Uptime and Dramatic Energy Savings
NTT Communications, the data infrastructure and networking arm of Japanese telecommunications giant NTT Group, reduced the energy costs of its two largest North American colocation facilities through the use of cooling management technology from Vigilent. NTT saw significant energy and cost savings from the project.
Facility Retrofit
National Snow and Ice Data Center and The RMH Group
Data Center Retrofit Project: 90% Energy Use Reduction on a Budget
The National Snow and Ice Data Center worked with The RMH Group and researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory for a retrofit of its main facility that included a new cooling system design, server virtualization, and a photovoltaic solar-powered uninterruptible power supply.
IT Product Deployment
XtremIO and Confidential Client
Global Manufacturer Improves SAP Performance and Gets Greener with XtremIO's All-Flash Storage System
A global manufacturer (identity confidential) deployed an all-flash storage system from XtremIO to significantly reduce its power and cooling costs and to save space in its data center. The storage system also improved the responsiveness of the manufacturer’s SAP/Oracle database environment to speed processing and support new applications.
IT Retrofit
HP Enterprise Group, India Research and Development Labs, Bangalore
HP Enterprise Group India R&D Data Center Transformation

HP Enterprise Server, Storage and Networking Bangalore, which is part of Hewlett-Packard’s Enterprise Business unit, retrofitted its 70,000-square-feet research and development data center. The retrofit included dynamic cooling, virtualization and self-service, automated IT services. The project reduced expenses, including power, hardware and operational costs, by $20m in three years while improving IT agility.
Modular Data Center Product Deployment
eBay and Dell
From the Data Center Floor to the Rooftop, eBay Drives Down Transaction Costs With Dell Data Center Solutions
eBay installed a rooftop prefabricated modular data center at a new mixed-design facility in Phoenix, Arizona, using Dell Data Center Solutions’ Modular Data Center. The facility, dubbed Project Mercury, is located in a desert environment yet the Dell modular data center uses a free-air cooling system all year.
