Power densities of modern IT equipment are creating a new set of environmental challenges that put IT equipment at risk of overheating. To compensate, data center cooling systems are being run at high power consumption settings. The EPA estimates that up to 30% of cooling system, or 15% of total power consumption is being wasted. The presentation introduces a simulation-based (computational fluid dynamics) approach to data center management that enables the owner/operator to predict the impact of operational changes, IT upgrades, maintenance scenarios before taking action in the real data center. The data center manager can know in advance the response of power consumption efficiency such as PUE and/or IT equipment inlet temperatures to any operational change.
